FDA Compliant Materials Overview
What are FDA compliant plastics?
FDA compliant plastics are plastics that are approved by the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for food contact. These materials may be used in food packaging, food processing and manufacturing, food storage, and in the transportation of food. While FDA compliant materials have the FDA's seal of approval, considerations must be made to ensure that the material will remain FDA compliant during use. FDA compliant materials must withstand any stresses in the environment they are placed in and should only be used in their recommended service temperature range. Additionally, some materials are only safe for certain types of food and are not considered compliant for other foods.
What does FDA compliant mean?
'FDA compliant' means that the material has been examined by the FDA and will not cause harm or adversely affect the taste, odor, or color of food that it comes into contact with. FDA compliant materials are also known as food grade or food contact substances (FCS).
Not all FDA approved plastics are BPA free. For certain products such as baby bottle and sippy cups, BPA must not be present to gain FDA approval. In 2018, the FDA reassured consumers that the amount of BPA used in food containers and packaging is safe, but would continue to monitor the situation.
Which plastics are safe for food?
The following plastics are FDA compliant and safe for food contact in natural grades: Acetal, HDPE, LDPE, Nylon, PEEK, PET, Polypropylene, PPS, PTFE, and UHMW.
Is recycled plastic FDA approved?
Recycled plastic, or used plastic that has been sorted and melted to turn into new products, is approved by the FDA on a case-by-case basis. Whether the recycled plastic gets FDA approved depends on the proposed conditions of use for the plastic and results from tests used to see how the recycling process removes contaminants.
Is all Delrin® FDA approved?
Delrin® is FDA approved in addition to being certified by the NSF and USDA. This means that the material can safely be used in any food grade application. FDA grades of Delrin® are used in food processing, coolers, and freezers.
